I am getting the EU error on the monitor screen what does this mean?

Either the test strip has been reused or the sampling window of the test strip is wet.

Please follow steps below:

1. Insert the code chip (either for dog or cat) with the meter turned off and when the screen display the word "OK", remove the code chip.

2. Insert a new, valid test strip into the meter, and in normal circumstances, it will start to display the temperature, code number, and finally the "water drop" symbol will appears and it means the meter is ready to perform the test.

3. If after inserting a new test strip and if you still get the EU error then it means the meter has an internal mechanical fault and the meter needs to be replaced.

Note: You can also get an EU error if you place the blood on the test strip before inserting the test strip into the meter. You need to first insert the test strip then place the blood into the blood collection window.

The screen is displaying ‘E-b’ or ‘E-t’, what does this mean?

‘E-b’ means the battery is too low to run a test and the battery needs to be replaced.
When ‘E-t’ is displayed, the temperature of the meter is below or above the system operation range of 10°C-40°C (50°F-104°F).
For other error types please refer to the user manual on pages 23 for problem solving and error symbols.

Why does the meter give a “Hi” reading and then 20 minutes later a “Lo” reading?

1. Insufficient blood sample - Please ensure that the blood sample fills the entire blood collection window, and it needs to be done only once. If the blood does not fill the collection window completely and the meter already starts to countdown the result will be incorrect.

2. Please make sure the correct code chip has been inserted into the meter before testing. If you use the code chip for Dogs and actually test on a Cat the result will be incorrect.

3. Please make sure the test strip is stored properly and the container is properly sealed. If the test strips are exposed to the air for too long, the enzyme will start to oxidate and affect the result. So you need to make sure the test strip vial has been closed tightly after each test.

Note: Cats can also have high blood sugar when they are nervous, anxious or stressed, sometimes the high blood sugar data obtained during the blood test does not mean that they are diabetic.

Take the 'control' bottle (little white bottle, if you have one) follow the instructions, and do a control test. This doesn't involve ANY blood, the liquid has a regulated dose of glucose in it. If the test results are within the guidelines, then the monitor is ok. Always make sure you do NOT touch the white strip (where the blood goes) as this will affect the results. And make sure you're using the correct measuring tool (for lack of a better term). There are two different setting pins, one for dogs and one for cats. If the numbers are still low, it just might be that their low. If you have concerns, check with your vet.

I keep getting the ketone sign displayed on the monitor screen what does this mean?

If the ketone sign is displayed on the meter and not a glucose number, then you must closely monitor your pet and contact your vet immediately. Please note the result showing on the meter is not for ketone, it's still a blood glucose result. The ketone sign will appear when the glucose result is over 250 mg/dL, which means your pet has insufficient insulin and cannot regulate their blood sugar level. In severe cases, your pet could experience symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, increased urination, confusion, or a coma. (refer to page 5 of the user manual - Ketone warning).

What is the range of test results for the control solution and why is ketone displayed on the screen?

The control solution result should be checked with the range printed on the vial of the test strip (please refer to page 22 of the user manual.) The reading/result displayed on the meter are Blood Glucose, even if you use the control solution to test, the result is for glucose (because the control solution is the test liquid that mimics the blood) not Ketone. The ketone that appears on the screen is to warn you that the blood glucose value that has been tested is higher than 250mg/dL, which means you will need to closely monitor your pet and to contact your Vet. (refer to page 5 of the user manual - Ketone warning).

What is the ideal blood glucose range for my pet? I want to be certain it is coming down into the acceptable glucose level range.

The ideal range that we suggest is 90 mg/dL -250 mg/dL (5 mmol/L -13.9 mmol/L). If your dog or cat’s blood sugar exceeds 250 mg/dL, the ketone sign will be displayed on the screen. This indicates that your dog/cat has insufficient insulin and cannot regulate their blood sugar concentration. You will need to contact your Vet immediately.

Note: The main function of a blood glucose meter is to monitor your pets blood glucose level, not for diagnosis and treatment. Our glucose monitor far exceeds the normal range for a dog and cat. If your dog or cat’s test value continues to approach or exceeds 250 mg/dL, then you must consult with your vet on a frequent basis. A dangerously high insulin level can result in your pet going into a coma without proper medical treatment.

What range is the glucometer?

20mg/dL-600mg/dL (1.1-33.3 mmol/L) is the glucose meter range. The numbers that fall out of this detected range will either show as Lo or Hi.

Note: A pet's normal glucose range before a meal should be around 70mg/dL - 120 mg/dL before a meal). We recommend measuring and recording your pets blood glucose at a fixed time daily.

If your pet’s glucose is lower than 50 or above 250 mg/dL, you should consult with your vet for professional medical advice.

What is the Unit Measurement on the Test Strips? What is mmol/L and mg/dL on the meter?

The test strips unit of measurement is mg/dL. To convert the measurement, simply multiply the mmol/L by 18 to get the mg/dL test result measurement -if your preference is to work in mmol/L.
For example: a test result 7.8 mmol/L is about 140 mg/dL. e.g. Say your cat's reading as 21mmol/L, the mg/dL reading is around 378. The control range printed on the test strip vial is not the testing results for your pet’s glucose level, it is only used for the calibration result of the control solution to the meter.

Can you switch between mg/dl and mmol/L ?

The measurement unit on the glucometer setting can be changed. The pre-set unit in every new glucose monitor is mg/dL. If you want to reset the unit measurement to mmol/L for your Pet Control HQ blood glucose meter please refer to your user manual page 13 (Step 8) for detailed steps. Please note to change the meter to mmol/L you need to follow all 8 steps in the user manual.

What is the ideal range for cat and dog blood glucose reading?

The ideal glucose value range for a canine is around 90-180 mg/dL (5-10 mmol/L). For a feline it’s around 90-250 mg/dL (5-13.9 mmol/L). If you continue to get a test result for your cat of lower than 90mg/dL, or higher than 250mg/dL, then we suggest you consult with your vet. If you continue to get a test result for your dog that is lower than 90mg/dL or higher than 180mg/dL, then we suggest you consult with your vet.

I did a ‘Control Test’ but forgot to mark it as a control test. Will it be included in the 7, 14, 21 and 28 day average, and is there a way to delete this test result/clear the memory? Is there a way to now go in and mark the test result as a ‘Control Test’?

Unfortunately, the meter cannot delete the test result from its memory. This is to prevent customers from accidentally deleting data and being unable to recall the data. Data can only be reset in our lab. We suggest marking the error data in your logbook and waiting until the old result is replaced by the latest result.

Does the glucometer keep the last reading? How do I find that reading?

When you press the ‘M’ button with the meter turned off, it will display the memory log on the screen. If you leave the meter for approximately 2 seconds, the screen will display a code number I.e., 848. If you keep pressing the ‘M’ button, at the bottom left of the screen it will display the 7, 14, 21, and 28 days result based on an average over the time period.

If you keep pressing the ‘M’ button after the 28 days average has been displayed, the log of blood glucose readings and the date and time of each of the readings will then be displayed on the screen.

I have done three or four tests in a row. The readings are all very different, ranging between 7 to 9. For diabetes, this difference is very large. Please advise?

The following actions need to be taken before conducting a test:

1. Please ensure the correct code chip has been inserted into the meter before testing. If you use the code chip for cats and test on a dog, the result will be incorrect.

2. Insufficient blood sample - Please ensure that the blood sample fills the entire blood collection window, this needs to be done all at once. If the blood doesn’t fill the blood collection window and the meter already starts to countdown, the result could be inaccurate.

3. Please ensure the test strip is stored properly and consider if the container of the test strip has been damaged. If the test strips are exposed to the air for too long, the enzyme will start to oxidate and affect the result. Make certain the test strip vial has been closed tight after each test.

Please note: Cats can also have high blood sugar when they are nervous, anxious or stressed. Sometimes the high blood sugar data obtained during the blood test does not mean that they are diabetic.

I get a reading of 29 at home, but my vet gets a reading of 17.5. Why would that happen?

1. This depends on when your pet last ate, as blood glucose volume changes very quickly. When digestion starts 30 minutes after eating, the blood glucose measurement value will be different than the value before your dog was fed. The blood sugar level will generally reach its peak 2 hours after eating (depending on the metabolism and the type of diet). The value should recover to the same rate as before eating, about 6 hours after the meal.

2. If the time interval between your pet’s test at home and the test at the vet is very long, then the obtained test value may indeed be different.

Please note: Dogs are generally less likely to affect the test value due to their emotional state. However, the emotional state of a small number of more sensitive or neurotic dogs may also cause the test value to be slightly higher. Whereas cats can have high blood sugar when they are nervous, anxious or stressed, sometimes the high blood sugar data obtained during the blood test does not mean that they are diabetic.

I have done two calibration tests and both readings vary in range. I then did another two tests, and they were within the same range. Why would this happen?

There are many reasons that could cause the test results of the control solution to fall outside the range, for example:
• Did you shake the control solution evenly before use?
• Did your discard the first 1-2 drops of the control solution after opening?
• Did you code the meter before first use? (Please refer to user's manual page 22)
However, if after 3-4 tests the value has become normal and within the range, then the reading will be consistent and accurate.

Please note:

1. The main purpose of changing the meter to CTRL mode when testing the control solution is because the result obtained can be separated from the actual blood sampling measurement result. The data measured by changing to the CTRL mode will not be included in the 7, 14, 21, 28-day test average calculation to avoid affecting the test result evaluation. Unless the control solution has expired or deteriorated, there will be no big errors in the measured results between the normal mode and the CTRL mode.

2. When using the control solution for calibration, please make certain you shake it evenly. After opening the bottle, discard the first 1-2 drops of the control solution to avoid the influence of precipitated substances on the test. Then place a drop of the control solution on the fingertip or the bottle cap. Insert the correct code chip into the meter before inserting the test strip, and then place the test port of the test strip close to the control solution. The result should reveal after the count down, when the control solution has fully absorbed into the test port.

I have a cat and a dog with sugar diabetes. How does it work with the code chips?

If you don’t need to switch the test from a dog to a cat, then you don't need to use a code chip to calibrate the meter for each test. Only do this when changing to a new batch of test strips. However, if you must test for both a cat and dog, then the code chip calibration must be done as the parameters between your dog and cat are different.

How do I get the battery case off?

The case is fitted snug over the batteries so you may need a screwdriver to pry the cover off.

What can cause the meter to be damaged?

Natural damage to the meter is very unlikely. Breakage is usually caused by the meter being dropped very hard or impact to the meter that may cause the internal part to fail.

Why use the code chips to calibrate the meter?

Using the code chip to calibrate the meter is to ensure the meter will identify the test strips that are about to be used. The parameter of the test strips will be transferred to the meter by the code chip, to ensure the accuracy of the test result until we change to another vial of new test strips and insert a new code chip.

For accuracy, use the control solution to perform the test before taking the actual blood sample from your pet. The control solution is a liquid that imitates the actual blood, which can be used to confirm that the test result falls within the correct test range. This is printed on the strip vial before we perform the actual blood sampling test.

You may choose to follow these steps:

1. Insert the code chip to ensure the meter received the parameter and the setting for the test strips that we are about to use to get accurate results. This is the calibration for the meter.
2. Perform the test with the control solution before the actual blood sampling test. This is the calibration for the test strips. (optional)

How many ml does the control solution have?

The control solution contains 3ml in the vial.

How do I use the lancing device?

Once the lancet is inserted in the lancing device, twist off the lancet's safety cap, then put back the lancing device head, ensuring it is on tightly.
Choose the depth (we recommend level 3), then pull the tail of the lancing device until there is a ‘click’ sound. Press the small white button to trigger the lancet. If it launched with a ‘click’ sound and feels the injection, it means the lancing device is workable.

Please note: When using the lancet to take a blood sample, ensure the tip of the lancing device is stuck to the site. Once triggering the lancet, do not remove the lancing device from the site immediately, please wait for a few seconds. Sometimes the lancet will only slightly touch the blood sample site if moved too fast.

The lancet device is pulled right out, what do I do?

If you pull the needle to the end before selecting the lancing depth, the internal structure of the lancing device will be damaged and cannot be used. You need to first select the lancing depth before you can pull the needle out of the lancing device. Once you select the lancing depth and have pulled the needle out, you will hear a ‘clicking’ sound. This indicates the lancet has been loaded and is ready for use. We recommend for both dogs and cats you select a minimum lancing depth of 3 or more.

I am trying to calibrate my meter but I keep getting different calibration readings is there something wrong with the meter or am I doing something incorrectly?

Please note that the control solution testing does NOT calibrate the meter. It checks the accuracy of the test strips for the meter. Therefore, the control solution result does not correlate with blood glucose results.

Control testing must be interpreted as Pass/Fail. Where the control test results fall within the indicated test range is in no way an indication of blood test results. Control solution has a completely different chemical and physical (a mixture of sugar, water, and other stabilizers) makeup compared to blood. These differences provide for stability and increased sensitivity to many conditions that could affect the blood glucose test system.

The control solution’s increased stability and sensitivity make it ideal for the field assessment of the glucose measurement system. If the result is within the range printed on the test strip vial label, then the meter, strips, and solution all pass the testing and are working properly.

My meter keeps displaying the code 866 and I cannot take a reading?

The code 866 usually appears on the screen when you press the meter button but you did not act on further testing steps within 3 seconds. The code 866 will disappear once you insert the test strip into the test port or leave the meter to turn off automatically. It's basically a safety device that users can see which code the meter has been set up for or which code they have inserted previously i.e. in your case for a cat which is code 866.

Where can I see a video on placement of the lancet device on ear? I know it is at the outer edge between edge and vein but the device head is big:

If its for a dog we recommend taking a blood sample for the ear vein. We suggest warming up the ear vein by rubbing it or applying a warm compress as this increases blood flow to the area.

When comparing results why is the reading on your meter different to the reading on another meter I have?

The reading is hard to be exactly the same, especially for the different brands meters. The parameter basis and the use method are different for each company. According to the ISO regulations, the results fall between + - 15% is normal and acceptable. Blood and cells are active and changing every second. Even measuring blood pressure you can only get similar values.

I had to leave my cat at the vet to do a Blood Glucose curve to get his diabetes regulated and left the device with them as I wanted to make sure that I was within the same range as them. I wasn’t happy with the outcome. Each reading has been completely off compared to their reading.

Based on the data you provided, we would like to know whether you used a blood analyzer or a general home blood glucose monitoring device to compare the values. Was the recording on the log sheet done once every 2 hours as indicated?

Additionally, could you provide the batch number of the testing strips? We will ask the laboratory to perform a cross-comparison. Thank you!

Regarding the explanation for the difference in blood glucose testing, we previously mentioned to you that different brands of blood glucose testing have different parameter settings. Therefore, there may be differences in test results between different devices. To obtain the most accurate results, we recommend using venous blood and a blood analyzer to obtain data.

In addition, different brands of blood glucose meters may also have different operating methods. Our blood sampling method is to place the blood collection window close to the blood sample and draw blood into the entire window. Incorrect operation of the test may also lead to inaccurate test data.

What is the gauge size of the lancets?

28 gauge

My meter gives a reading ‘EC’ what does that mean?

‘EC’ means that the battery need to be replaced.

I am trying to calibrate my machine and nothing happens when I insert the code cards.

You need to ensure the code chip is inserted fully into the test port so the connection is made. Please be gentle when inserting the code chip.

I did the control solution test and the reading I get on the monitor is higher than the range on the test strip bottle?

This may be caused by an expired control solution or test strips or the testing window is wet before testing.

What battery does the monitor come with?

3.0 V lithium battery

What is the significance of the numbers that appear on the backside of strip (I. E. A-21, A-22 etc.

The printing section numbers on each plastic sheet of the test strip act as an identifier for each piece. They hold no significance for the user or the test results.

I am wondering about the error margins of the Pet Control HQ Monitor and the Alphatrak 3 which one is more accurate? Is it normal for both monitors to differ in readings? What are in the normal range of acceptable error margins?

It is hard to say which monitor is more accurate because every brand of glucose monitoring system has its own standards and the test ranges which will be created based on the standard parameters. The parameters are all slightly different between each brand due to the different analyzers or equipment used. If the base parameters are set up differently, then the results cannot be the same.

The most accurate and fair comparison between different monitors should be:

1. Ensure all products/accessories are in good condition, and have not expired shelf life or deteriorate. (Test strips that are not fresh or have been moistened will give high test results.)
2. Ensure that all preparation before performing tests is correct. (dry, clean hands, the blood samples are not influenced by medications.)
3. The veterinarian conducts a cat/dog capillary blood test with each monitor and compares it with the cat/dog venous blood hematology analyzer test results.
4. Capillary blood test results obtained using a glucose monitor that compares to venous blood analysis results within plus or minus 10% should be considered accurate.

The Lancet is sometimes crooked. Maybe this is the reason I am missing the vein often enough. Can this be made straight reliably?

When taking a blood sample with the Pet Control HQ Lancing Device you are not getting veinous blood (from the vein) but capillary blood. We recommend when taking a blood sample to apply firm pressure to the lancing device and hold the lancet straight and steady. The lancet should be perpendicular to the skin surface to ensure a straight puncture.

My pet isn’t a bleeder and I am struggling to get an adequate sample of blood. What do I do?

For pets that are not "bleeders," we recommend consulting your veterinarian to identify the best site for blood collection. Once identified, warm the area with a warm cloth or blower to increase blood flow before taking the sample. For further assistance, please contact your veterinarian.

What is the difference between the low battery symbol displayed on the screen and the “E-b” error message.

The difference between the two signs is that "E-b" error means the user needs to change the battery immediately, otherwise the monitor cannot operate. The low battery symbol flashes on the screen is to remind the user that the battery life is almost at its end, the user needs to get a new battery from us, but the monitor will continue to operate for a while until the "E-b" sign is displayed.

My monitor is displaying the code “E-b” I replaced the battery however it’s still displaying the "E-b" error code.

The problem is the shelf life of the battery may have expired as even though the battery was purchased brand new the battery will continue to discharge when not in use.

Why are test strips discarded even when no blood was collected within 3 minutes?

The Pet Control HQ Test Strips come in a GHD Enzyme and if exposed to oxygen for too long it will result in inaccurate readings.
