Causes of Bad Breath in Dogs

Dental Hygiene

Poor dental hygiene is the most common cause of bad breath in dogs. If a dog’s teeth are not cleaned on a regular basis, plaque and tartar can build up and cause bad breath. If left untreated, this can cause gum disease and tooth decay, leading to even worse breath.

Food

The type of food a dog eats can have an effect on their breath. Low-quality food can cause bad breath, as can processed foods that are high in sugar and fat.

Medical Conditions

Bad breath can be a sign of medical conditions such as kidney or liver disease, respiratory infections, diabetes, and even cancer. If your dog’s breath is particularly bad, it is important to take them to the vet to rule out any medical issues.

Ways to Reduce Bad Breath in Dogs

Brushing Their Teeth

Brushing your dog’s teeth on a regular basis is the best way to reduce bad breath. If your dog is not used to having their teeth brushed, start slowly and use a pet-safe toothpaste.

Using a Dental Scaler

Using a dental scaler to remove visible plaque and tartare build up on their teeth. Plaque and tartare build up  leads to bad breathe or other dental issues.

Provide a Healthy Diet

Providing your dog with a healthy, balanced diet is important for a variety of reasons, including reducing bad breath. Avoid feeding your dog processed foods and sugary snacks, as these can cause bad breath.

Visit the Vet

Taking your dog to the vet for regular check-ups is important, as the vet can spot any potential medical issues that may be causing bad breath.
