Energizer FAQs

My energiser has stopped working. What should I do?

• Charge the unit using a mains power adaptor or battery charger with 8.4V/1A output for at least 8 hours.

• Then place the energiser in direct sunlight for 3 days to fully recharge its internal battery.

• Ensure the charger is suitable for solar energiser batteries.

What is the pulse rate of the energiser?

• Standard pulse rate: Every 1.5 seconds

• If the battery is discharging, the rate slows to one pulse every 3 seconds

My solar energiser makes a continuous ‘peeping’ sound. Is it faulty?

No, this is normal. The sound comes from the transformer, which boosts the voltage from the battery. It does not indicate a fault.

Does the energiser have a built-in fuse?

Yes, it includes a safety fuse to protect the internal circuitry.

What temperatures can the energiser operate in?

The unit works effectively in a temperature range of –20°C to +65°C (–4°F to 149°F), suitable for most Australian climates.

Should the energiser be turned on while charging?

No. The energiser does not need to be switched on during charging. Charging works in both the off and standby states.

How do I know when the battery is fully charged?

If using a charger with an indicator light, the LED will turn green once the battery is fully charged.

How deep should I install the ground rod?

• The ground rod should have at least 2.4 metres (8 feet) of contact with the earth.

• Space multiple rods at 3 metres (10 feet) apart if using more than one.

• Avoid placing near telephone lines or underground utilities.

Which clip connects where?

Black clip (negative): Connects to the ground rod

Red clip (positive): Connects to the fence wire

Can I connect the energiser to a barbed wire fence?

No. Barbed wire is not recommended due to the risk of animals getting caught and receiving prolonged shocks. Use polytape, polywire, or polyrope instead, and position it 30 cm (12 inches) from any barbed wire.

Should I use polywire or aluminium wire?

Aluminium wire: Excellent conductivity and long-lasting, but may sag over long distances and is more expensive.

Polywire: More flexible, easier to handle, and suitable for most general-use applications.

Is this energiser compatible with electric poultry netting?

Yes, the energiser works with electric poultry netting. Ensure your energiser’s output matches the netting’s requirements.

Does the energiser need direct sunlight to charge?

Yes. Direct sunlight is required for solar charging, even when the unit is turned off. Avoid shaded areas or indoor charging unless using a mains adaptor.

Does the fence need to form a complete loop?

No. The system functions by completing the circuit through the animal and ground rods when contact is made with the live wire.

Why does the energiser stop working in direct sunlight but works in shade?

This may indicate over-voltage protection has activated due to high solar input. Check your unit’s specifications or contact support for troubleshooting.

Can polytape be used on a chain-link fence?

Yes, but you must use insulators to attach polytape securely and prevent current leakage into the metal fencing.

Why is the shock from the fence weak or faint?

Check the following:

Poor grounding – Ensure the rod is installed at least 2.4 m deep

Vegetation – Clear weeds or long grass touching the live wire

Loose connections – Ensure all clips and terminals are secure and clean

Can electric fence wire be buried underground?

Yes, but it must be well-insulated. Use a poly pipe for mechanical protection, but note it does not prevent electrical leakage without proper insulation on the wire.

How do I test if the fence voltage is weak?

1. Disconnect all fence wires and test voltage directly at the energiser using a fence voltage tester.

2. A consistent clicking sound and high reading indicate the energiser is functioning.

3. If the voltage is low even at the source, the energiser may need servicing

Can the energiser power a three-sided fence?

Yes. A closed loop is not required. The system completes its circuit through the grounding system when an animal makes contact with the live wire.
